I don’t know about you, but whenever I think about the beginning of sin, I immediately think about the Garden of Eden and how Adam and Eve disobeyed God. But to be honest, that is not where sin started. Would you believe that Sin started in the mind of an Angel? Before I show the scripture about how sin started in the mind of an Angel, let’s understand what Sin is.
James 1:12-15 (NKJV) “(12) Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. (13) Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. (14) But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. (15) Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”
Sin comes from Selfish Desire
If we look at the last part of the scripture, starting with verse 15, it states that when a desire has been conceived, it gives birth to a sin. So, the question to ask is, “Where are desires conceived?” The answer is simple: Your Mind. When you think on thoughts that only benefit you, it gives no glory to God, nor does it help anyone else. Your mind is getting very pregnant with selfish desire. When you are now pregnant with the thought of your own selfish desire, temptations come. In the NLT translation of verse 14, “Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.” Now who do you think brings the temptation? Yep. Satan or his demons. What Satan and demons do is to entice you. Enticement is making your selfish thoughts even more desirable to the point that you can’t stand it. It is like putting wax on a 2024 brand-new sports car. After you sit inside, you smell that “New-Car” smell that is irresistible. Or there is a lady’s shoe made by Christian Louboutin that was originally $3,500 that went on sale for $75.00. Enticement in Greek means to bait, catch by bait, or set a trap. It also means to deceive or beguile. In other words, lies. Their number one goal is for you to give birth to that selfish thought. So, what does it mean to give birth to a selfish desire? Giving birth is acting upon your thought. Here is the process in summary:
- Selfish Desires – When your thoughts dwell in your mind until you conceive or get pregnant with the thoughts.
- Temptations – What Satan or demons do to flood your mind with your selfish thoughts.
- Enticement – Satan and demons setting up bait and traps to push you towards acting on your selfish thoughts. Remember it is also the area of deception where they are lying to you. Demons want you to think that your selfish desires are a benefit to you, while you are blinded of the negative consequences that will happen if you act.
- Drawn Away – Pulling away from God.
- Action – Giving birth to selfish thoughts. Deciding to make what you were thinking a reality. If the selfish thought is disobedience to God’s Word, God’s Will, or God’s plan, it is a sin.
God will never tempt you because He Himself can never be tempted. But God will test you. A test is usually a sacrifice of yourself, your own desires, that will pull you closer to God. A temptation is something that is always pointing towards yourself of which you are the benefactor. I know you’re thinking, “Is it wrong to want and desire things?” Technically no, but our focus is to want what God wants for our lives more than what we want. If we want what God wants, then He grants us the desires of our heart. (Psalm 37:4)
Oh yeah, the origin of Sin. Isaiah, 14:13,14 records what was on the mind of the angel called Lucifer. Lucifer was very jealous and envious of God. He saw how God was worshiped by the other angels and how powerful He was. Over time, he wanted to be more powerful than God and be worshiped. God immediately saw the selfishness in Lucifer’s heart and kicked him out of heaven immediately. Yeah, I know some of you are thinking, “Are you saying that God created sin because he created Lucifer?” Technically no. God created us and the angels to have a free will; the freedom to choose whatever and whomever to serve. Lucifer willingly made a choice wanting to be more powerful than God and worshiped like God. The problem with that is that there was no way possible for Lucifer to ever be in the same league or level as God.
All is not lost. You have the power to resist the devil. Remember it is dwelling on selfish thoughts that opens the door for demons to set traps for you. James 4:7 (NKJV) “Submit yourself unto God, resist the devil and he will flee from you.” You can never fight Satan or a demon by yourself. But you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. (Philippian 4:13)
Be blessed! 😊

All is True about the Origin of Sin, and we have to be very careful and not be ignorant of the Devil’s Devices!!!
Fact and truth are well-spoken! Evil has the chance to destroy and compromise our minds. Knowing your adversary is powerful and a saving tool. Knowing where thoughts unlike God come from, as the being that God personally and immediately kicked out of heaven, should inspire us to always stay on the Lord’s side so that He will never have to turn His back on us nor remove us from His presence.
